‘Homologation’ - the mere sound of the word makes any Jalop’s delicate parts harden or dampen, according to our own plumbing, am I right? The great Homologated cars of years past have given us cars like the Lancia Delta HF Integrale, or the Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth...or this proud son of Nascar regulations - The 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2.

Legend tells the tale of Richard Petty’s thirst for a more aerodynamic body back in the 1980’s, and from that desire, a couple of twins were born - The 86 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe and our lost car for today - the Pontiac 2+2 - yes, the ones with enormous rear windows and tragically small trunk openings.

Here, enjoying the Northern California Sun and enjoying the status of ‘the only 2+2’ in the Trailer Park, City, County and all Bay Area (and one of approx 1,200 build back in Reagan’s America, Bought new as told by the original owner) Such uniqueness must be special, I am told several times. I’m sure the chicks just melt at the sound of that asthmatic 150BHP V8, but at least the Automatic tranny lets your right hand free to go to first or second base with a 3rd time Divorcee post that last-call-for-alcohol at the bar down the street. The good news is that you won’t spill your drink when you floor the gas.

Did all the interiors from the 1980’s share the same components across the big 3? The doors remind me of my Dad’s 1984 LeBaron - the same shapes, window switches, glove boxes and scrunched leather.

16” steelies are there - I like them. This one did NOT have the NASCAR rear sticker (supposedly reserved only for cars that ran track) but otherwise all colors, stripes and badges are there. Although the plastic-fantastic interior could use some hard love and armor-all

So, there you have it. I am most familiar with the SS, but this 2+2 stays the course. Coming soon to a Barrett-Jackson auction (or a cheesy episode of Pawn Stars) soon.

Now that I think about it Buick should have built a Regal Areo coupe during this time. They were racing in NASCAR also, might have been something cool to see.

Quite possibly one of the coolest G-bodys made.

Rarer than Monte SS Aerocoupe, and slicker than Buick Grand National.

Although, it is not as brutal looking as GNX... and probably not as brutally fast, either.

It does look better in black, than Pontiac grey, as Monte and Grand National do, also.

If only it had Monte’s T-tops, Buick’s monochrome sinister look, and had been converted to Firebird’s rear hatch, instead of a trunk lid too small to manage the car’s own spare tire...

For those reasons... I would probably go with an F-body Firebird, instead of a G-body like this.

3rd-gen Firebirds had commonly available T-tops, looked great in monochrome black (KITT made sure of that) and were available with the V6 Turbo engine in the late 80s, also. And just before the re-design in the early 90’s the body style actually got nicely refined and slick, such as the first SLP Firehawks.

Although some say 3rd-gen Firebirds have problems fitting proper exhaust systems, and other mechanical issues.

If slick aero is the goal... a fastback on a G-body still isn’t as good as even a stock 3rd-gen or 4th-gen clean F-body. I am not a huge GM fan, but nobody builds much of anything this slick anymore, even if you prefer the competition, like Mazda RX-7, Toyota A70 Supra, Nissan Z32 300ZX, Porsche 944 Turbo/S2/968 or 928, or others...

Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger aren’t this slick anymore. Thanks government pedestrian impact and SUV impact standards for cars that are much more blunt and bulky, and necessarily heavier than this.

Don’t disagree at all that Black looks 10x better - but for the sake of true restoration and those future judges at 2023 Concourse D’Elegance in Monterey, the color change would be a demerit, since the only color these came from Factory was that Silver/Gray one.
